But the demands on a busy small business never end, so in the past this task usually got pushed to the bottom of the to-do list.

In January, we put together a basic plan for what topics we’d cover in each month’s newsletter. The first idea for April was something funny and jokey for April Fool’s Day, to show off our humorous writing chops. But we were so busy closing out the month of March that we missed that unforgiving April 1 deadline.

The second idea was a Tax Day theme – how taxing it can be to write your own web content, and how you can make wise use of any deductions or credits available to you. Of course, we spent the week before April 15 swimming through an officeful of invoices and receipts for the business – so our tax-themed newsletter did not get filed.

Now it’s almost May, and I’ve been pondering April’s newsletter topic for the past 2 weeks. I sat down in front of my blank screen this morning, staring the deadline straight in the face, and thought:

    Thank you for using the perfectly good word “problem!” I thought that word was totally taboo for business use; I’m glad to see it’s not.

    Somewhere, at some time, some idiot business consultant got paid way too much money for pitching the idea that the word “challenge” was so much better than “problem.” (This pitch usually involved “rah-rah” sports language and “We need to inspire the team!” noises.)

    So a straight-forward process–Identify a problem, analyze the problem, fix the problem–got twisted into a process requiring “inspiration and team building.” And lots of business consultants to tell companies how to do both. While the word “problem” had the Scarlet Letter of “negative connotations!” hung around its neck.

    So…kudos to you for being a straight-forward writer willing to use an accurate and useful word precisely where’s its needed. Glad to see it! Thanks!
